A warehouse fire in the city of Hamburg has prompted authorities to alert residents about the heavy smoke and potential toxins in the air. Videos shared on social media depict the warehouse ablaze early on Sunday, emitting a large plume of smoke into the atmosphere.
The Hamburg fire department issued a warning stating that the fumes and chemical compounds released by the fire could impact respiratory health. Furthermore, the smoke cloud is heading towards the city center.
According to reports, around 140 individuals have been evacuated so far, as confirmed by a police spokesperson.
According to a local report, residents in the area have been advised to shut their windows and doors, while the fire department spokesperson stated that the inner city of Hamburg is completely dark.
The cause of the fire remains unclear.
The national railway company, Deutsche Bahn, has suspended train services between Hamburg and Büchen, and passengers traveling between Hamburg and Berlin should expect delays of up to 90 minutes.
