Relief amidst scarcity: Fuel supply assured in Lagos

Amidst the concerns over fuel scarcity in Lagos and neighboring states, the Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN) has stepped forward with assurances of uninterrupted supply. Mr. Clement Isong, speaking on behalf of MEMAN, highlighted the commencement of fuel distribution from depots to filling stations across the region. He emphasized the collaborative efforts to address the issue promptly and transparently, aiming to provide clarity to the public.

Isong acknowledged the challenges faced during the Easter period, citing low stock levels for some MEMAN members due to inadequate replenishment at depots. This resulted in outages at retail outlets in the past week. However, he reassured the public that supplies have resumed, with MEMAN members working diligently to expedite the distribution process.

Efforts include extending operating hours and weekends at depots to ensure sufficient stocking of retail outlets. The collective goal is to eliminate fuel queues and stabilize the supply chain before the upcoming Sallah holidays next week.

However, despite these efforts, fuel queues have reappeared in Lagos as supply diminishes. Long queues of vehicles were observed at various filling stations across the state, including prominent locations like Ikorodu Road, Ikeja, Surulere, and Victoria Island.

At the Total Filling Station in Ikeja, queues stretched for several kilometers, leading to traffic congestion. The presence of fuel racketeers selling in jerrycans along Ikorodu Road further indicated a shortage in supply.

Additionally, the disparity in retail prices contributed to the queues, with NNPC stations selling at a lower price compared to other major and independent marketers. Independent filling stations, in particular, have been facing stock shortages for several months.

A marketer, speaking on condition of anonymity, mentioned the shortage in supply from importers of the last resort. Furthermore, delays in outstanding payments by NNPC Trading Ltd. to international traders were identified as contributing factors to the scarcity.

Despite the challenges, stakeholders remain committed to resolving the issue and ensuring a steady supply of fuel to the public.
