Groundbreaking: Kenya elevates first woman to Head Air Force

Kenya’s President William Ruto made history on Thursday by appointing Maj Gen Fatuma Gaiti Ahmed as the first female commander of the air force, marking a significant milestone for gender equality in the country’s military.

This decision comes in the aftermath of a tragic helicopter crash last month, which resulted in the loss of the military chief and others, necessitating new leadership to steer the air force forward.

In addition to Maj Gen Ahmed’s appointment, other key positions were filled, including a new head of the armed forces. Gen Charles Kahariri was promoted to assume the role left vacant by the late military chief.

Maj Gen Ahmed’s ascent to this esteemed position has been marked by her relentless pursuit of excellence, breaking through gender barriers throughout her distinguished career. She has shattered norms by achieving the ranks of brigadier and major general in a traditionally male-dominated military leadership.

Commencing her military journey in 1983 with the Women Service Corps, Maj Gen Ahmed initially served in support roles such as administration, logistics, medical, and communication. The integration of women into the main military services in 1999 opened doors for her and others to pursue leadership roles.

President Uhuru Kenyatta, during Maj Gen Ahmed’s promotion to major general in 2018, hailed her as a beacon of inspiration for women nationwide, urging her to demonstrate that no profession is off-limits for women.

Maj Gen Ahmed’s determination to excel despite facing discouragement from some family members reflects her resilience and unwavering dedication to making a positive impact. Inspired by her uncle’s military career, she embraced values of discipline and hard work that guided her path to success.

Her remarkable rise through the ranks serves as a testament to the strides made towards gender equality within the armed forces, inspiring women across Kenya to pursue their dreams fearlessly.
