Renowned Nollywood actress and producer, Funke Akindele, has achieved a groundbreaking feat with her latest blockbuster film, ‘A Tribe Called Judah.’ The movie, released on December 15, 2023, has broken records by becoming the first Nollywood film to gross an impressive N1 billion (One Billion Naira) within just 21 days of its cinema release.

Funke Akindele took to her Instagram page to share the exhilarating news, expressing gratitude to the Lord, Nigeria, and Ghana for the overwhelming success of the film.

‘A Tribe Called Judah’ has consistently shattered records since its debut, earning over N133 million in its opening weekend and surpassing N613 million within the first 14 days. By January 2, the film had already set a historic record as the highest-grossing Nollywood film ever, with reported box office earnings of N854 million within 18 days in cinemas.

Directed by Adeoluwa Owu (Captain Degzy), the film tells the compelling story of a family of boys attempting to rob a mall to raise money for their mother’s hospital bill. However, their plan takes an unexpected turn when they encounter armed robbers at the mall.

The star-studded cast features renowned actors and actresses, including Nse Ikpe Etim, Timini Egbuson, Ebelle Okaro, Uzor Arukwe, Genoveva Umeh, Nosa Rex, Boma Akpore, Ebele Okaro-Onyiuke, Etinosa Idemudia, Fathia Balogun, Jide Achufusi, Olayode Juliana, Olumide Oworu, Paschaline Alex, Tobi Makinde, and Yvonne Jegede.

The movie’s plot revolves around a woman named Jedidah Judah, who has five sons from different men, each belonging to different tribes. Akindele shared that the story holds personal significance, incorporating elements of her late mother’s experiences and shedding light on the challenges faced by single parents and mothers in society.

‘A Tribe Called Judah’ is currently being screened in cinemas in Ghana and the United Kingdom, further extending its impact beyond Nigerian borders. The film’s extraordinary success marks a milestone in Nollywood’s history and underscores Funke Akindele’s prowess as a filmmaker and storyteller.
