Q: What inspired you to become a karaoke host in Lagos, and how did you start your journey in this profession?
A: I wasn’t familiar with karaoke until one day when my boss, “Deeboi,” invited me to go out with him. He suggested I try singing there, and that’s when I first encountered the concept. At Westend Bar on Akowonjo Road, hosted by Berlinda, I witnessed people singing on the screen. Deeboi encouraged me to take the mic, predicting that I would be noticed. I chose “Perfect” and “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran for my first performance, and it turned out to be a great experience
Q: Have you found additional opportunities or benefits through your karaoke performances?
A: Absolutely. Some customers appreciate my singing to the extent of generously tipping, and in some instances, this has led to job opportunities and other favorable outcomes.
Q: Have you faced any challenges, and if so, how did you overcome them?
A: Challenges are inevitable when trying something new. To overcome them, I focus on improvisation and learning from mistakes. I ensure that I address any issues promptly, like improving sound quality, and I consistently strive for progress.
Q: How do you engage the audience and select songs during your karaoke performances?
A: Reading the crowd is crucial. Before starting, I interact with the audience through jokes and hyping. I usually begin with popular songs to engage everyone, eventually introducing newer songs. This way, I encourage requests and keep the atmosphere lively.
Q: Do you notice any preferences or trends in the type of songs your audience enjoys?
A: Preferences vary; some enjoy oldies, while others prefer the latest Nigerian songs. There’s no specific genre, and it largely depends on the diverse tastes of the audience.
Q: How do you keep up with trends and changes in the karaoke scene?
A: Trends and changes are constant, and I make an effort to incorporate them into my karaoke performances. Staying updated allows me to offer a fresh and engaging experience.
