Kidnappers demand N50 million ransom for Benue LG chairman and victims
Abductors of the caretaker Benue LG chairman of Ukum Local Government Area in Benue State, Rev. Gideon Haanongon, who was kidnapped on his way to a funeral, have reached out to the family, demanding a N50 million ransom. The chairman, along with his personal assistant, police orderly, and driver, was abducted around Anyagba, Tongov Katsina-Ala LG.
A source close to the family revealed on Tuesday that the kidnappers contacted relatives and insisted on a N50 million ransom for the release of the victims. It remains unclear whether this amount pertains to all four individuals or is specific to the chairman alone.
State Commissioner for Information, Matthew Abo, confirmed that contact had been established with the kidnappers but refrained from disclosing the exact ransom amount. Abo assured that the state government has mobilized security operatives to work towards the safe rescue of the chairman.
Governor Hyacinth Alia, speaking at the funeral of Ter Katsina-Ala on Saturday, pleaded with the kidnappers to release the chairman and the other victims. He assured that the government is willing to assist them in reintegrating into society.
The State Public Relations Officer, SP Catherine Anene, stated that she had no information regarding the abduction of the chairman and three others.
