In a significant development for Ethereum’s layer-2 scaling, the Blast testnet has debuted amid a surge of enthusiasm, drawing over $1.3 billion from users eager for yield and airdrop rewards. Despite initial controversy surrounding Blast’s launch, the project is now enticing developers with a “Big Bang” competition, offering them a chance to earn airdropped tokens and promoting winning apps to the mainnet scheduled for late February.

Blast founder Tieshun “Pacman” Roquerre, also the creator of the leading NFT marketplace Blur, is set to judge the competition alongside representatives from investors Paradigm and Standard Crypto. The Blast team, including Pacman, will provide guidance and mentorship to developers participating in the contest.

In a tweet thread on Tuesday, Blast disclosed plans to distribute half of its total airdrop to users who have already locked up over $1.3 billion worth of cryptocurrency, earning “Blast points” in the process. The remaining half of the airdrop is reserved for developers, encouraging decentralized app (dapp) creators to join the platform through initiatives like the Big Bang competition.

Blast’s approach, reminiscent of Blur’s successful strategy, involves leveraging substantial token incentives to attract users and developers. Blur distributed over $800 million worth of BLUR tokens in 2023, coinciding with its rise as the most-used marketplace, surpassing OpenSea in trading volume.

The platform’s growth follows initial pushback to its November launch, with criticisms directed at Blast’s approach to taking deposits before the network was live and preventing fund withdrawals until the mainnet debut in February. Despite the challenges, Blast’s appeal remains strong, positioning itself as a key player in Ethereum’s layer-2 landscape.
