In east London, a newborn baby girl was discovered wrapped in a towel inside a shopping bag, according to the police.

A member of the public found the infant in Newham, enduring sub-zero temperatures, and took immediate action to keep her warm until paramedics arrived.

The Metropolitan Police assured that the baby was found unharmed and is currently safe and well in a hospital.

The incident unfolded when a dog walker came across the newborn at the junction of Greenway and High Street South around 21:15 GMT on Thursday.

Ch Supt Simon Crick commended the actions of the person who found the baby, emphasizing that their efforts to keep the infant warm were crucial in saving her life.

Expressing concern for the welfare of the baby’s mother, the police issued an appeal for her to come forward.

The authorities were alerted to the situation by the dog walker’s call, and they are now focused on ensuring the well-being of the mother, recognizing that she may have undergone a traumatic experience and requires immediate medical attention following the birth.

Ch Supt Simon Crick emphasized that trained medical professionals and specialized officers are prepared to offer support to the mother.

The plea is for her to contact them via phone or to go to the nearest hospital or police station, underscoring the importance of addressing her needs promptly.
