The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) Teaching Hospital, Parklane, Enugu, is set to initiate an indefinite strike starting January 31, 2024. The decision follows seven weeks of notice, with previous ultimatums to the Enugu state government going unanswered.

In a communique released after an Emergency General Meeting (EGM) on December 8, 2023, the ARD-ESUT cited critical issues such as a severe shortage of doctors, escalating insecurity, and inadequate sponsorship of the residency program. The association expressed disappointment in the lack of response from the hospital management and the state government despite a 14-day ultimatum and an additional 49 days of grace.

The communique, jointly signed by Dr Chukwunonso Ofonere, President of ARD-ESUT, and Dr Ikemefuna Nnamani, Secretary General, emphasized the urgent need for the employment of medical personnel, including Medical Officers, Resident Doctors, and House Officers. It called for a state of emergency on doctor recruitment, increased security measures, and the prompt payment of the 2023 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF).

The doctors highlighted the absence of security personnel at the hospital gate, resulting in increased assaults on medical staff. Additionally, salary increments and the exclusion of house officers from state-provided hardship/palliative measures raised concerns.

Despite efforts to address these issues, the doctors lamented the impending 375% increase in rents for hospital quarters, adding to the crisis. As the January 31, 2024 deadline approaches, the doctors are preparing for an indefinite and potentially prolonged industrial action if their concerns remain unaddressed.

The ARD-ESUT appealed to Enugu State Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah to intervene, emphasizing the potential hardships and loss of lives that could result from a disruption in healthcare delivery in the state.
