Governor Yusuf Firm on NNPP, rejects Ganduje’s APC Offer
In a clear stance against party defection, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has firmly stated that he has no intentions of leaving the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP). This response comes after an invitation from the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, urging Governor Yusuf to join the APC.
Gov. Yusuf, the only NNPP governor in Nigeria, affirmed his commitment to his current party, NNPP, despite the wooing efforts by Ganduje during a recent APC stakeholders’ meeting in Kano. Ganduje extended invitations not only to Governor Yusuf but also to his godfather Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso and Ibrahim Shekarau of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Ganduje, emphasizing the interest of Nigerians and the country, appealed to Gov. Yusuf and NNPP members to defect to the ruling APC for the sake of political growth in the state. Despite this, Gov. Yusuf, through his media director Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, firmly rejected Ganduje’s invitation. The statement clarified that Gov. Yusuf has no plans to leave NNPP, stating that changing a political party is a process that requires careful consideration.
During the same meeting, Ganduje expressed the APC’s acceptance of the Supreme Court judgment regarding the Kano state chapter and acknowledged President Bola Tinubu’s support. Ganduje hinted at talks with governors and lawmakers from smaller parties nationwide, anticipating their defection to the ruling APC in the near future.
