House urges enhanced security in Plateau and Ekiti amidst Rising Killings.
The House of Representatives, in response to the escalating violence, has called on top military and police officials to intensify security efforts in Plateau and Ekiti states. The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and heads of other security agencies are urged to deploy additional personnel to address the surge in killings.
This resolution emerged from motions presented by Ishaya Lalu and Akin Rotimi, representing Bokkos/Mangu and Ikole/Oye Federal Constituencies respectively. Lalu, citing recent attacks in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, emphasized the devastating impact on the community, prompting the House to advocate for a Civilian Joint Task Force in Plateau. Furthermore, a committee will be established to investigate the root causes of the recurrent terrorist attacks in Plateau State.
Rotimi, expressing concern over the security situation in Ikole/Oye Federal Constituency, highlighted the vulnerability of the region due to its forests, topography, and dilapidated federal roads. A recent attack in Oke-Ako, Ikole Local Government Area, resulted in the tragic loss of two traditional rulers and left others with life-threatening injuries.
The House, in response, has mandated the Committees on Defence and Legislative Compliance to monitor and report weekly until security is restored in the affected areas.
