A Federal High Court in Abuja has instructed the Federal Government to investigate and prosecute the perpetrators behind the killings of journalists in Nigeria between 1986 and 2023.

The court’s directive comes in response to a suit filed by the Incorporated Trustees of Media Rights Agenda against the Attorney-General of the Federation, seeking justice for slain journalists, including Dele Giwa, Bagauda Kaltho, Alex Ogbu, and others.

Justice Inyang Ekwo, delivering the judgment, emphasized the government’s obligation to ensure the safety of journalists and prosecute those responsible for attacks against them. The court ordered the FG to investigate, prosecute, and punish the perpetrators of these attacks, providing effective remedies for the victims.

Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Norrison Quakers, praised the court’s decision, highlighting the importance of the investigation and urging the government to comply with the order. He expressed concerns about the thoroughness of the investigation and the willingness of the government to enforce justice.

Executive Director of the International Press Centre, Lanre Arogundade, also applauded the judgment, commending Justice Ekwo for his stance on the matter. He emphasized the significance of the order in deterring future attacks on journalists and promoting press freedom and the rule of law.

Both Quakers and Arogundade stressed the importance of the government’s immediate action in response to the court’s directive, signaling its commitment to justice and press freedom.
