The Commissioner for Agriculture in Lagos State, Ms. Abisola Olusanya, revealed that the agricultural sector plays a crucial role in the state’s economy, contributing over N7 trillion annually to its Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This underscores the state’s commitment to food sustainability and security.

 

During a ministerial press briefing marking the first year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term, Olusanya emphasized the importance of developing food market organizations to enhance production, supply, and combat illegal practices in the agricultural food chain.

 

Furthermore, the state government disclosed plans to launch 50 newly acquired vans for meat transportation under the Eko Meat Van initiative, aiming to address logistical challenges and ensure the delivery of wholesome meat to consumer

 

On rice production, Olusanya highlighted Lagos’ status as the largest consumer of rice in Nigeria and outlined the capacity of the Imota Rice Mill to contribute significantly to food security. The government’s partnership with other states, particularly in the supply of paddy, demonstrates its commitment to sustaining production and meeting the high demand for rice in the state.

 

Dr. Oluwarotimi Fashola, the Special Adviser on Agriculture, emphasized the importance of paddy production to ensure the smooth operation of rice mills. He underscored the collaborative efforts with other states to enhance paddy supply and maintain sustainable rice production.

 

As Lagos continues to prioritize agricultural development, partnerships and strategic initiatives remain essential to achieving long-term food security and economic growth.
