Youths rally behind Rivers Governor amid impeachment calls

Rivers State youths have dismissed allegations against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, refuting claims that he owes council chairmen outstanding payments. They reaffirmed their steadfast support for Governor Fubara amidst calls for his impeachment by the State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Amb. Chijioke Ihunwo, Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) in Rivers State, led a press briefing on Wednesday to articulate the youths’ unwavering commitment to safeguarding Governor Fubara’s reputation and the state’s welfare.

Ihunwo cautioned against unwarranted criticism from the chairman of the caretaker committee of the Rivers State chapter of the APC, urging him to focus on his responsibilities as the representative on the board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

The youth leader warned of potential repercussions should attacks on the governor persist, threatening to organize protests in Abuja if necessary. He also called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene and curb inflammatory rhetoric, which he argued could destabilize peace in Rivers State.

Ihunwo reiterated the readiness of Rivers youths to oppose any attempts at impeaching Governor Fubara by lawmakers whose seats have been declared vacant. He criticized Local Government Area (LGA) chairmen for using the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) platform to level baseless accusations against the governor.

The NYCN chairman issued a stern ultimatum, announcing the impending removal of LGA chairmen from office on June 18th, 2024.
