Revenue boost: Sokoto IGR hits N3.8bn quarterly

Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, announced that the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) has increased from N2.6 billion to N3.8 billion in less than a year. Speaking at the Annual Conference of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) in Abuja on Tuesday, he attributed the rise to new measures his administration implemented for tax collection and management.

“When we assumed office, the taxation system was plagued by irregularities affecting both collection and utilization of the revenue. We introduced reforms that cleaned up the entire revenue collection and management system,” Governor Aliyu explained.

As a result of these reforms, the governor highlighted that the administration was able to generate more funds, which are being judiciously used to enhance the quality of life for the electorate. “Through this intervention, the state’s Internally Generated Revenue has risen from N2.6 billion to N3.8 billion in less than a year of our administration,” he reiterated.

He also mentioned various projects his administration has executed, including road networks, water supply, empowerment programs, and improvements in the health sector. Aliyu assured the CITN of his administration’s commitment to collaborate with the institute to further improve tax collection in the state. He emphasized the need for this collaboration to meet the increasing demands for people-oriented programs.

Aliyu outlined his administration’s 9-point innovative agenda, designed to align with the aspirations of the state’s people, underscoring the need for additional funds to fulfill these expectations. He urged CITN to massively sensitize Nigerians about the importance of paying taxes, highlighting the general lack of awareness regarding tax responsibilities.

The governor praised CITN as a professional body with significant contributions to national development, urging them to use their expertise to aid the country’s revenue generation efforts.

Earlier, CITN President Samuel Agbeluyi stated that the annual conference aimed to discuss ways to enhance the institute’s mandate. He stressed the importance of taxation in meeting citizenry demands and called for exploring more effective tax collection methods.

Agbeluyi commended Governor Aliyu for his support of the institute, describing it as exemplary. Conference speakers praised the event’s timeliness and the CITN’s efforts in organizing it.
