Arm Holdings revealed updated chip designs and software tools aimed at bolstering smartphones’ ability to handle artificial intelligence tasks. These enhancements come alongside modifications to how Arm delivers its blueprints, potentially expediting their adoption.

Arm, known for powering smartphones, PCs, and data centers with its energy-efficient technology, unveiled new CPU and GPU designs optimized for AI tasks. Additionally, it introduced software tools to streamline AI application development on Arm chips.

The significant change lies in Arm’s delivery method. Instead of offering abstract designs, Arm collaborated with Samsung Electronics and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing to provide ready-for-manufacturing physical blueprints.

Chris Bergey, Arm’s senior vice president and general manager of the client line of business, emphasized that Arm aims to support its customers rather than compete with them. The focus is on helping chip manufacturers expedite their time to market while addressing the growing importance of components like neural processing units (NPUs) for AI performance.

NPUs have become integral, with Microsoft stating that its recent AI features rely on them. Arm plans to offer more comprehensive designs, enabling chip firms to integrate their NPUs seamlessly.

“We’re combining a platform where these accelerators can be very tightly coupled,” Bergey explained.
