Minimum wage advocacy: SDP Chairman urges N100,000 Minimum Wage for Nigerian workers.
The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Shehu Gabam, has called on the Federal Government to prioritize the welfare of Nigerian workers by ensuring a minimum wage of at least N100,000. Gabam emphasized the need for a wage that enables workers to meet their basic needs without struggling, thereby fostering a conducive work environment.
In a recent appearance on Channels Television‘s Politics Today, Gabam highlighted the importance of alleviating the financial burden on civil servants and private employees, suggesting that a minimum wage below N100,000 could lead to dissatisfaction and potential disruptions within the workforce.
The call for an improved minimum wage comes in the wake of negotiations between the Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress, and the Federal Government. While the Tripartite Committee proposed a minimum wage ranging from N62,000 to N250,000, Gabam stressed the significance of setting a reasonable wage that reflects the economic realities faced by workers.
Furthermore, Gabam expressed disappointment in the stance of some Nigerian governors who deemed a wage higher than N60,000 as unsustainable. He underscored the role of effective governance in prioritizing the welfare of workers and ensuring the viability of a higher minimum wage.
Additionally, Gabam advocated for a comprehensive review of the fuel subsidy removal policy, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach to address the associated economic challenges. He asserted that prudent management and the elimination of ghost workers could facilitate the sustainable implementation of an increased minimum wage by states.
In conclusion, Gabam’s advocacy for a N100,000 minimum wage reflects a commitment to addressing the financial well-being of Nigerian workers and fostering a conducive work environment. His call for a balanced approach to economic policies underscores the importance of considering the broader implications of wage decisions.
