New Leadership at CBN: Cardoso Assumes Acting Governor Role
In a significant development, Dr. Olayemi Michael Cardoso has officially assumed the position of Acting Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). This appointment follows President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s nomination, pending confirmation by the Senate.
This transition comes in the wake of Mr. Godwin Emefiele’s resignation from the esteemed position of Governor. The Central Bank of Nigeria, in a statement signed by Dr. Isa AbdulMumin, Director of Corporate Communications, also confirmed the assumption of roles by the Deputy-Governors-Designate. They step into their positions in acting capacities, succeeding Mr. Folashodun Shonubi, Mrs. Aishah Ahmad, Mr. Edward Lametek Adamu, and Dr. Kingsley Obiora, who resigned as Deputy Governors of the CBN.
Dr. Cardoso, along with his newly appointed colleagues, took their oaths of office in a brief ceremony held at the CBN’s Head Office in Abuja. Together, they now bear the responsibility of overseeing monetary and financial sector policies on behalf of the Federal Government.
Dr. Cardoso brings a wealth of experience to this role, having served as an Economic and Development Policy Advisor, Financial Sector Leader, former Chairman of Citi Nigeria, and Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget in Lagos. His educational background includes degrees from Aston University in the United Kingdom and the Harvard Kennedy School in the United States.
These appointments, made on September 15, 2023, are subject to confirmation by the Senate, reflecting a strategic shift in Nigeria’s financial leadership. As Dr. Cardoso takes on this crucial role, all eyes are on the potential directions and policies he may steer in the nation’s economic landscape.
