In a surprising turn of events, a section of the Supreme Court was engulfed in flames on Monday morning, prompting the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to voice suspicions regarding the incident. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, but the Federal Capital Territory Police Command has initiated an investigation. The PDP, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, has raised questions about the timing, alluding to pending electoral appeals before the court.

According to the statement, “The PDP is worried over the fire outbreak, especially given heightened public apprehension of possible arsonist attack, with the intent to cripple and frustrate the Supreme Court from effectively discharging its constitutional duties, especially with regard to high-profile electoral cases, including the Presidential Election Appeals pending before it.”

The party is demanding a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident to ascertain if there was any foul play or sabotage involved. They emphasize the need for the investigation’s findings to be made public, unlike previous incidents that were allegedly swept under the carpet during previous administrations.

While urging the Federal Government to enhance security measures around the Supreme Court, the PDP also seeks assurance for the safety of sensitive documents and equipment, particularly during this critical period.

It’s worth noting that both Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in the last election, and Atiku Abubakar, his counterpart in the PDP, recently filed appeals against the tribunal judgment regarding the February 25 presidential election.
