UNILAG’s best PhD thesis awardee triumphs over challenges
University of Lagos (UNILAG) celebrated its outstanding Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) student in Mathematics, Dr. Ige Aminat Olawunmi, during the 54th convocation ceremony. Dr. Ige shared the remarkable story of facing marital challenges, including divorce and remarriage, while diligently pursuing her academic dreams.
Opening up about her journey, Dr. Ige revealed the hardships she encountered during her Ph.D. program, including divorce, depression, two armed robbery attacks, surgeries, and recurring bouts of malaria. Despite these adversities, she emphasized her resilience, taking three steps forward for every setback.
She expressed gratitude for the support of her supervisors and highlighted the positive aspects of her academic journey, such as starting a mentorship community and getting remarried to a supportive partner. Dr. Ige acknowledged her commitment to success, saying, “while on the program, I got married, this time around to the adorable man I think of. A man who supports my dreams and ambition.”
The awardee, recognizing the challenges faced by university lecturers and students, called on the federal and state governments, including President Bola Tinubu and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to enhance the welfare of academics. She urged the private sector, the primary beneficiaries of institutional products, to contribute to the education sector’s advancement.
UNILAG’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, congratulated the graduating students, encouraging them to view Nigeria’s challenges as opportunities for creative solutions. She emphasized the importance of exhibiting qualities of character and knowledge in their future endeavors.
