In a poignant moment on Tuesday, Akin Rotimi, a Nigerian lawmaker representing Oye/Ikole Federal Constituency in the parliament, couldn’t hold back tears while discussing the escalating insecurity in his state. Focusing on the recent tragic murder of two monarchs in Ekiti State, Mr. Rotimi emotionally urged for urgent security intervention.

The motion brought attention to the surge in criminal activities in Ekiti North 1 (Ikole/Oye) Federal Constituency, leading to loss of lives and properties. The two traditional rulers, Onimojo of Imojo Ekiti Oba Olatunji Samuel Olusola, and Elesun of Esun Ekiti Oba David Babatunde Ogunsola, were brutally attacked in the Oke-Ako area, resulting in fatalities and life-threatening injuries.

The House of Representatives, moved by the emotional plea, passed resolutions calling for immediate security measures. The Chief of Army Staff is urged to deploy soldiers to the Oke-Ako area, while the Inspector General of Police and other security heads are directed to intensify efforts in Ekiti North 1 and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The House also compelled the Ministry of Works and FERMA to rehabilitate crucial roads in the affected Federal Constituency, addressing infrastructural challenges contributing to the security situation.

In a broader context, the insecurity in Ekiti State echoes the concerning nationwide trend. Killings and kidnappings persist across various regions, indicating a pressing need for comprehensive security reforms.

The House’s adoption of these urgent resolutions reflects a collective commitment to addressing the security crisis, underlining the gravity of the situation. The adjournment of the parliamentary session aims to allow lawmakers to participate in bye-elections and underscores the significance of these issues in shaping legislative priorities.
