Rivers crises, court strikes out suit against Tinubu’s intervention in Rivers crisis
In a recent development, a Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt has dismissed a suit challenging the intervention of President Bola Tinubu in the state’s political crisis. The suit sought to restrain Governor Siminalayi Fubara from presenting the 2024 Budget to lawmakers led by Martin Amaewhule, claiming the peace agreement brokered by Tinubu was unconstitutional.
The lawsuit, filed by the lawmaker Victor Jumbo and others, aimed to prevent Fubara from re-appointing nine commissioners who resigned, citing the defection of 27 lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress. Despite the disappointment expressed by the claimants’ lawyer, Emmanuel Rukari, the court ruled against jurisdiction, citing a recent case involving Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja to avoid Rivers crises.
