Prison deterioration: Senate addresses Suleja facility's aging infrastructure

The Senate shed light on the recent incident at Suleja Medium Security Custodial Centre, emphasizing that it was not a jailbreak but the result of the prison’s dilapidated condition. Senate Committee on Interior Chairman, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, revealed that the facility, constructed over a century ago with mud, experienced a wall collapse due to heavy rainfall, leading to the escape of inmates.

Senator Oshiomhole clarified that efforts to re-arrest the escaped inmates are underway, with some already apprehended. He commended the Minister of Interior’s briefing on the matter and stressed the need for modernizing prisons to align with correctional standards.

Acknowledging the challenges posed by outdated infrastructure, the Senate emphasized the importance of appropriating resources to upgrade prisons nationwide. Senator Oshiomhole emphasized the role of the National Assembly in addressing this issue and leveraging modern technology to improve correctional facilities.
