Fagbemi pledges review of sentencing for suicide attempts

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, has committed to reevaluating the law concerning sentencing for suicide attempts.

He made this pledge during a meeting with representatives from the Asido Foundation, an NGO focused on advocating for mental health awareness and reforms to support individuals with mental disorders and their families.

Prince Fagbemi emphasized the administration’s prioritization of health issues, particularly under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“The law regarding suicide attempts warrants a second look, especially in cases where offenders are determined to be mentally unstable. Rather than punishment, these individuals require compassion, treatment, and support to address such situations within society,” stated Fagbemi.

Acknowledging that any changes made would not be binding on individual states, he assured that he would engage with the Body of Attorneys General to address the matter collectively.

Additionally, Fagbemi committed to discussing concerns related to the Mental Health Act with his counterparts in the Federal Ministry of Health.

Dr. Jibril Abdulmalik, the founder of Asido Foundation, urged the AGF to reconsider the laws penalizing suicide attempts and to ensure the effective implementation of the Mental Health Act signed into law by former President Muhammadu Buhari in January 2023.

Abdulmalik highlighted global medical evidence indicating that the majority of individuals attempting suicide have underlying mental health issues, particularly depression.

He emphasized the need for support and treatment rather than punishment, as those in such situations are often experiencing a sense of hopelessness.

Abdulmalik expressed concern about burdening judicial officers with cases that are better addressed through healthcare systems.
